Today in my “Smart Money” class, we were beginning a discussion about the influence of advertising on our shopping when someone mentioned the television ad for school supplies running in our area for the Meijer stores. I love this ad! It has been used during a few “back-to-school” seasons by the store and it never fails to put a smile on my face. In case you’ve missed it, a mom comes home after shopping for school supplies and her children get extremely excited about all the goodies she has brought them – ordinary, but necessary supplies like number 2 pencils, glue, and a ruler. In case you have missed it, here’s a link:

Meijer Back To School Ad

The ad concludes with the children giving mom a big hug and exclaiming, “Mom, you’re the best!” along with a disclaimer that these children are paid actors and your kids will never act like this.

How true! Your kids probably won’t thank you for the work you did getting them ready for school this year. But as a teacher, I would like to thank you. It costs a lot of money and takes a lot of time, but the work parents do to get their children ready for school is really appreciated. Even if your kids didn’t hug you for the blue notebook you bought them, please know that your effort will help make them succeed at school this year. Thank you!
